It’s not often that one of American’s three great hiking trails becomes the focus of a Hollywood movie. But the popularity of Cheryl Strayed’s memoir Wild, a tale of redemption by baptism in the wilds of the Pacific Coast through a 1,100-mile hike on the Pacific Crest Trail, has prompted filmmakers to produce a screen adaptation of the book.

The eponymosly named film will star Reese Witherspoon as Strayed, who decided at 22  to hike the PCT, from Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State, after her mother’s untimely death and her own divorce. The film is slated for theaters in December 2014.
