When dry, this rough road can be negotiated by a high-clearance two-wheel-drive. But if it has rained recently, you'll want a four-wheel drive, as the road can get seriously muddy.
Near the top of Black Mountain, the trail splits. One portion goes to the summit of the mountain, and the other portion continues on Black Mountain Truck Trail to the Mesa Grande area. The trail may be closed (with gates) due to heavy rains, so it's not a bad idea to check with the ranger station just in case.
Cactus, Cold, Forest Fire, Heat, Snakes
The entrance to the trail is at the junction of Forest Road and Pamo Road northeast of Ramona. Continue on Forest Road and you'll soon come to Black Mountain Truck Trail.
