Batiquitos Lagoon is a stunning wetland ecosystem, located on the coast about 30 miles north of San Diego, in the city of Carlsbad. The reserve, which is home to abundant wildlife, consists of 610 acres with a drainage basin of about 55,000 acres. The lagoon can be seen and experienced from a mellow nature trail on the north side of the lagoon.

There are a number of access points along the lagoon trail, which is about 2 miles long in total. This is a guide to starting at the end of Gabbiano Lane, which out and back makes for a 3 1/4 mile hike.

The trail starts just east of Interstate 5 at the end of Gabbiano Lane and goes most of the way to El Camino Real on the east end of the lagoon. To get there, take the I-5 Exit 44 and head east on Poinsettia Lane for a short distance and make a right on Batiquitos Drive. In a few hundred feet, make a right onto Gabbiano Lane and head to the end to park.
