Engineers have made rapid progress in robotic prosthetics year, thanks in part to funding from the Department of the Defense and the need to help the many veteran’s who lost limbs during the recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

This video shows a veteran rock climbing using a robotic arm called the DEKA Arm System, which was created by a team lead by Dean Kamen, the man behind the Segway.

The robotic arm–nicknamed the “Luke Arm” after Luke Skywalker from Star Wars — was developed as part of DARPA’s Revolutionizing Prosthetics program, a program of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) intended to fast-track to the development of new prosthetics.
