How is that fierce creatures make cute babies? Case in point: a family of mountain lions caught on camera in the Santa Monica Mountains.

One of the nearly-grown kittens, a 15-month old puma kitten dubbed P-33 (pictured above), was feared dead by Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area wildlife officials, but looked fine and frisky in the photos.

Park officials have been tracking the lion family, a mother and three kittens, since the cubs were only a month old, but P-33 had disappeared for a long enough to cause worry that he’d been killed. The recent photos were captured in February by a trap camera baited with a dear.

The National Park Service posted photos on its Facebook page last week. It is estimated that between 4,000 and 6,000 mountain lions call California home.
