President Obama has set aside more than 330,000 acres in northern California last Friday to create a new national monument at Berryssa Snow Mountain. The area, which is near San Francisco and Sacramento, is a popular destinationfor hikers and campers. The monument encompasses a large tract of the Inner Coast Range.
Obama also set aside new monuments in Texas and Nevada. Last fall, he created San Gabriel Mountains National Monument just north of Los Angeles, which includes Mount Baldy.
With the addition of this latest round of designations, Obama has set or expanded a total of 19 monuments during his administration. That brings the total amount of land he’s set aside to 260 million acres, which is more than any other president.
