A breaching whale landed on a boat full of tourists early this week off the coast of Baja’s Cabo San Lucas, killing a woman and severely injuring two other passengers.
The fatality was a 35-year-old Canadian woman who was knocked off the boat during the collision. She was pulled from the water but later pronounced dead at a local clinic, according to an Associated Press report.
The 25-foot-long boat was carrying nine tourists on a snorkel tour and was near shore when the collision occurred. There are a large number of whales off the Baja shore this year, which Mexican authorities say may have played a role. Press reports said the whale was a gray whale, but Jorge Urban, a whale expert from Baja California State University told the AP it was almost certainly a humpback whale.
